How a pot gets made
six steps · most ceramics, slowly
Step 01
Wedging
Kneading the clay by hand to push out air bubbles and bring it to a consistent moisture. The boring-but-essential first step.
Step 02
Throwing
Centering the clay on the wheel and pulling it up into form. The part that looks like magic on Instagram and feels like a wrestling match in person.
Step 03
Trimming
After the piece firms up overnight, I trim the foot and refine the silhouette. Most pieces die here.
Step 04
Bisque Firing
First firing, around 1000°C. Hardens the clay into a permanent ceramic body, porous enough to accept glaze.
Step 05
Glazing
Where the magic — and the surprise — happens. Each glaze has its own personality. Some surprise me.
Step 06
Final Firing
Around 1240°C, hot enough to vitrify the clay. Eighteen hours from cold to cold. The kiln does what it wants.
